Position : Ship's Nurse

Job Description :

  • Responsible for providing and maintaining high standards of individualised patient care for passengers and crew.
  • Responsible for assisting the Senior Nurse to ensure a safe and efficient nursing operation within the Medical Department.
  • Provide routine and emergency nursing care for all passengers and crew.
  • In addition to routine office hours, undertake on call duties for emergency visits and admissions.
  • Assess patients as first medical responder to emergency calls onboard.
  • Provide ongoing care for patients admitted to the Medical Centre. In-patient care encompasses the management of a wide variety of clinical problems including cardiac disease (thrombolysis and cardiac monitoring), trauma/orthopaedic problems and acute medical and surgical emergencies.
  • Undertake safety duties associated with the position.
  • Represent Carnival UK and assigned vessel in a positive manner to passengers, officers and crew, outside agencies, travel professionals, VIPs and corporate employees.
  • Provide an excellent level of customer service.

Working Conditions :

  • Teams vary in size from one doctor and two nursing officers, to two doctors and four nursing officers depending on the size of the vessel and its itinerary.
  • The ships' Medical Centres consist of several inpatient beds; including at least one critical care room; 1 or 2 consulting rooms, x-ray room, emergency room, laboratory and dispensary.
  • Equipment for in-patients: oxygen delivery (from cylinders and concentrators), cardiac monitoring systems, infusion pumps and ventillators. Equipment for emergency use: AED's, manual defibrillators and external pacemakers. Equipment for patient transfer: wheelchairs, stretchers, spinal boards and immobilization devices. Equipment for diagnostic purposes: ECG machines, ultrasound (on some ships), Sonicaid (for foetal Doppler monitoring), spirometry & PEFR, x-rays and a wide range of laboratory investigations such as blood tests (blood glucose, FBC, U&E, LFT, cardiac tests including quantitative D-dimer, Troponin I and BNP measurements, ESR, INR), urinalysis, urinary Beta-HCG, tests for influenza A&B, strep throat, legionella, malaria, gram stain, hepatitis, HIV, Norovirus and salivary or breath alcohol measurements.
  • Dispensary: stocked with a comprehensive range of medications including thrombolytics.
  • Supplies: a wide range of supplies for minor and major injury and wound management are available, such as suture materials, dressings, plaster and dynacast for fracture immobilization, slings, splints and an autoclave machine to sterilize surgical instruments.

Requirements :

  • Registered nurses with a broad range of experience in acute care areas. Must be able to demonstrate proven proficiency in a wide range of clinical skills, including care and assessment of acutely ill patients and management of minor injuries and medical conditions. An Emergency Department background is preferred although consideration may be given to those with relevant experience in Medical Admissions Units or Critical Care settings. Must possess the ability to work independently as well as be an effective member of a small team.
  • Current registration with the United Kingdom Nursing and Midwifery Council or appropriate Governmental regulatory body.
  • Possession of a valid accredited ALS/ACLS certificate prior to joining a ship.
  • Medical certificate equivalent to the United Kingdom Maritime and Coastguard Agency ENG standards.
  • Eligible for issue of a United States C1/D Visa.
  • Good IT skills, and working knowledge of Microsoft Office software in a Windows based environment.
  • Good command of the English language.
  • Ability to prioritize efficiently in fast-paced environment, deliver required results within pre-established budgets, and meet established deadlines.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commitment to stay with the company for at least one year and a desire to progress to rank of Senior Nurse.
